Our comprehensive eye exam will provide you with the most up-to-date glasses prescription as well as a complete assessment of eye health from the inside out.
Included in your exam:
- Determination of your glasses prescription taking into account the visual needs of your profession or hobbies
- Visual field testing using our automated perimeter
- Assessment of eye pressure to evaluate the risk of glaucoma
- Dilation to evaluate complete eye health for conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and eye tumors.
Macular Pigment Ocular Density (MPOD)
Most of our patients know someone who has been diagnosed with Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD is one of the leading causes of blindness in the aging population. The MPOD allows us to measure a risk factor for AMD in that it can measure the amount of protective macular pigment in the retina. Lower density of macular pigment has been correlated to a higher chance of developing macular degeneration. Early detection and monitoring prior to symptoms occuring is crucial to preservation of vision.
Your eye health is important to us. We offer additional screening tests to enhance the quality of your care as well as allow for early detection of eye diseases.
Comprehensive Eye Exam
Our digital retinal camera allows us to take pictures of the internal structures of your eye. We are able to visualize the retina, macula, optic nerve and blood vessels, each of which can be compromised in certain disease processes such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, high blood pressure and diabetes. These photos are recommended as a baseline for the doctor to follow disease progression over time.
Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Our Topcon 3D OCT1-Maestro allows us to look at the optic nerve and retinal tissue at a microscopic level giving us a much more detailed look at these tissues past what can be seen with the naked eye. This advanced technology allows for early detection of conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. It also aids in the detection of any diabetic changes that may be occurring in the retinal tissues resulting from sub-optimal control of the disease. The OCT can provide numerical values to tissue thickness which allows for detailed monitoring of ocular disease conditions from year to year.
We recommend that all of our patients have a yearly comprehensive eye exam. More frequent examination may be warranted for various eye diseases and conditions.
While this is a component of our comprehensive eye exam, it is also a crucial test in determining the progression of diseases like glaucoma or the detection of neurological diseases of the eye or brain.
