Macular Pigment Optical Density
Most of our patients know someone who has age related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 50 in the western world.  We now have an instrument which can measure one of the risk factors for developing AMD.  This screening test measures the amount of protective macular pigment in the retina.  If the amount is low, patients may be able to raise it with diet or nutritional supplements.  Early detection and monitoring prior to symptoms occurring is crucial to preserving vision.
Visual Field Test
Every adult eye exam includes a peripheral vision screening using a computerized autoperimeter.  This test aides us in checking for glaucoma or other neurological diseases of the eye.
Tonometery
An increase in the pressure inside the eye is a risk factor for developing glaucoma.  We utilized our new non-contact tonometer which is an air puff test that is very quiet and gentle.  We also perform Goldmann tonometry which measures the intraocular pressure by gently touching the cornea after a numbing drop is instilled.
Retinal Photography
Our digital retinal camera allows us to take pictures of the back of your eye.  These photographs are recommended as a baseline for the doctor and to follow disease progression over time.
Eye Health Exam and Refraction
We provide unhurried eye exams using the latest technology.  The external and internal parts of the eye are examined for glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, high blood pressure and other systemic diseases.  We use a computerized autorefractor and phoroptor  to arrive at your eyeglasses or contact lens prescription.  These instruments are highly accurate but we also take into account any special visual needs your job or hobbies may require.
